Blackhawks win, rumors surround the Bears and Jimmy Garroppolo and Melo is still on the trading block

After losing three in a row, the Blackhawks got some respite in their schedule in the form of a road game against the Phoenix Coyotes.  The result was a 4-3 win for the Hawks.  Hawk goal scorers were Patrick Kane, Ryan Hartman, Marian Hossa and Artemi Panarin.  Kane and Hossa’s goals were scored on a revived Hawks power play, but still, it wasn’t a performance that inspired confidence.

The Hawks were up 3-0 after the end of one period, but let the Coyotes back in the game by giving up three goals.  While I can’t say Corey Crawford has been bad since coming back from emergency appendectomy surgery, he isn’t as sharp as he was early in the season.  The Hawks went into the third period up 4-3 and managed to hang on.  It wasn’t a terribly impressive win, but two points are two points.

My kingdom, and first round draft choice for a quarterback.

Sports talk shows have been hyping the idea of the Bears trading their first round draft choice (third overall) to the Patriots for backup quarterback, Jimmy Garroppolo.  My initial thought is the Bears trading with the Patriots is a huge mismatch.  I suspect that Bill Belichick will give Ryan Pace a wedgie and take his lunch money.  Despite Tom Brady’s saying he wants to go on for four or five more years, I don’t think it will happen.  If Garropollo is really good, I suspect the Pats will keep him.  It boils down to trusting Belichick more the Bears brain trust.  Plus, memories of former Pats QB, Matt Cassell are still bouncing around in my head.

On the flip side of that, the Bears history of first round draft choices is mixed. 2015 first round pick, Kevin White seems more like a long shot to be an impact player. 2016 pick, Leonard Floyd has a chance to be an impact player on defense.

Well, maybe Bill Belichick will be nice to the Bears and not clean their clock.

Have you never been Melo?

In NBA news/rumors, the LA Clippers have emerged as possible destination for Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony.  One reported fly in the ointment is the Knicks reluctance to take Jamal Crawford back in trade.  It seems odd that the Knicks, after years of taking bad contracts and guys with assorted issues would draw the line at Crawford.  It’s enough to give Jamal a complex.

When it comes to trading for Melo, the Clippers have salary issues when it comes to matching Melo’s salary.  To make a run at a championship, the Clippers need to keep Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and J. J. Redick.  Beyond that there is limited value.  Coach Doc Rivers’ son is pulling down 11 million a year.  While Rivers (the player) has improved, how much of that 11 million is the result of basketball ability, and how much is the result of bloodline can be debated.  With or without Melo, the Clippers aren’t going very far in the playoffs.

More next time.
