Diary of a Chicago Sports Fan

Patriots win the Super Bowl and Brady is the GOAT, but not the bad kind

If there was any question as to who the greatest quarterback in NFL history is, it was eliminated when Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to a 34-28 overtime win in Super Bowl XI.  At one point the Atlanta Falcons led the Pats by 25 points and they led by 19 going into the fourth quarter.

Brady finished with a stat line of 42-63 with 466 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception.  Through first three quarters Brady wasn’t particularly sharp, but in the fourth quarter and overtime, he put on one of the best displays of quarterbacking under pressure in the history of the NFL.  The fourth quarter and overtime stood in stark contrast to the first three quarters.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons exploded for 21 points in the second quarter.  What seemed to a back breaker for the Patriots was an 82 yard pick six by Robert Alford on a Tom Brady pass over the middle.  The Patriots were in field goal position at the time.  The Patriots responded with a field goal just before the half, but the 21-3 halftime.  Going into the fourth quarter the Falcons were up 28-9.

That set the stage for the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.  Brady was hit often early in the game, but as the game wore on, the Falcons defense tired.  Brady was sacked five times, but the Falcons were unable to make a big play in the fourth quarter or overtime.

The Falcons had two or three opportunities to make a play to put the game away, but didn’t.  At one point they were in field goal position late in the fourth quarter, but a sack and a penalty took them out of range.  That will make for a long off season.

Atlanta quarterback, Matt Ryan, played well, going 17-23 for 284 yards, 2 touchdowns and no picks.  Plus, Julio Jones showed why he’s the best receiver in football, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough.

And in one of the most interesting post games in history

As if the game wasn't

entertaining enough, watching NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell present the Lombardi Trophy to Patriots owner, Robert Kraft, was the icing on the cake.  While Kraft didn’t make a long speech, he did say that this championship was the sweetest of all, because of events in the last two years.  Point made.

The Patriots say they think Brady can play for another 3-5 years.  I don’t know about that, but regardless he’s the GOAT.

Oh yea, the Hawks won a game

In Chicago sports news, the Blackhawks came away with a 5-3 win over three Dallas Stars in Dallas Saturday night.  Hawks goal scorers were Ryan Hartman, Gustav Forsling, Patrick Kane, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Jonathan Toews.  Van Reimsdyk scored late in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and Toews added an empty netter.

He win was like so many the Hawks have had this season.  They played just well enough to beat a mediocre team.  Corey Crawford, in a somewhat disturbing trend, allowed three or more goals.  The first goal he let in was a softie from an almost impossible angle.  I look for the Hawks to move him before the start of next season. Not because he’s not good, it’s just that Scott Darling is a cheaper option and isn’t much of a drop off in talent.

As for the cartoon, it’s the cover of a book I wrote years ago.  The caption is probably especially true in Atlanta.

More next time.
