Diary of a Chicago Sports Fan

Hawks and Cubs disappoint while Bulls and White Sox salvage the weekend

In what was a hectic sports weekend for Chicago, it was the Bulls who provided a playoff victory. The Bulls held on for a 106-102 victory over the Celtics in the Garden. Jimmy Butler was beast down the stretch and finished with 30 points. Bobby Portis also came up huge for the Bulls with 19 points and 9 rebounds.

Isaiah Thomas, playing one day after the tragic death of his sister, led the Celtics with 33 points. The Bulls had a huge edge on the boards, 53-36, coupled with a surprisingly good defensive performance was enough, but just barely. I'm happy the Bulls won, but still look for the Celtics to win in six. Hope I'm wrong.

Trading places

Going to the Stanley Cup playoffs, I really thought the Hawks had a shot at the Cup for the 4th time in eight years. After the Nashville Predators dismantled the Hawks 5-0 Saturday night, serious doubt is creeping in. Remember in the movie. “Back to the Future” when Marty sees a picture of him fading? I think that's where we are at. Unless McFly pops Biff in a hurry, the Hawks playoff hopes are gone. In addition, serious changes could be on the horizon.

Do you know a good realtor?

If the Hawks do lose in the first round, that will be twice in two years. For an old team, that's not a good thing. In addition, the Hawks are always up against the salary cap. Maybe it's time to unload some of their high prices core. Admittedly, that's easier said than done. I don't want to sound ungrateful because the Hawks core has given me the best hockey memories of my life. I just think it's time to move on.

Bullpen is now a Bearpen

The Cubs were swept by the Pirates over the weekend. Sunday's final was 6-1. Jon Lester pitched great, again, and again didn't get a win. The Cubs bullpen could be a point of concern if they don't right the ship soon. Outside of Wade Davis, everyone has taken a stint of being ineffective. Bullpens are volatile things. Look for the Cubs to tinker with their pen if things don't smooth out soon.

It's halfway through May and the Sox aren't out of it

The White Sox continue to get good pitching to go with an almost non-existent offense. That combination was good enough for 3-1 win over the Minnesota Twins Sunday. James Shields went 6 innings giving up 1 run on an inside the park homer by Brian Dozier. Sox center fielder, Jacob missed on a leaping attempt to snag the ball. May seemed to be playing very shallow for Dozier. As I see the position players the Sox bring up from the farm, I'm struck by just how poorly they develop position players.

Once again Avisail, my bad

Having said that Avisail Garcia was again the offensive hero, hitting a 2 run homer in the10th to provide the margin of victory. Garcia and Matt Davidson continue to be the Sox offense. Each has 10 RBI's. The win puts the Sox at 6-5 on the year. Who would have guessed the Bulls and White Sox would be the bright spots of my Chicago sports weekend?

More next time.
