Bears out Pace other teams in overspending for unproven quarterback talent |
In years
gone by the Bears have traded down in the draft. This year they
traded up one slot, and paid an arm and a leg to do it. The Bears
traded their 1st, 3rd and 4th round
picks in this year's draft plus next year's 3rd round pick
to the San Francisco 49ers for the 49ers first round pick. That pick
was the second overall pick in the draft and used it to pick North
Carolina quarterback, Mitch Trubisky. I'm blown away, and not in a
good way. It seems like Ryan Pace is doing a better job of building
the 49ers than the Bears.
Just shoot amongst them
If
someone had taken Trubisky with the second pick and the Bears wanted
a quarterback, I would just have soon they had picked DeShaun Watson.
To me there are a cluster of quarterbacks who are roughly equal in
their likelihood of being good NFL quarterbacks. To pay what the
Bears did could cripple this team for years.
So is Mike Glennon the Bears version of Grandpa Ross?
I don't
like the pick in and of itself, but I like it even less in context.
The Bears just spent a bunch of money on free agent quarterback, Mike
Glennon. If they wanted Trubisky so much, why pay for Glennon? If
you want a place holder, why not make a run at Brian Hoyer, or even
let Mark Sanchez play for that matter?
A missed opportunity for me
Yesterday
I did a meme of the Three Stooges as the Browns front office. I had
them representing the wrong guys. They seem like a fit for the Bears
now. Maybe Harry and Lloyd of Dumb and Dumber fame would be
appropriate.
So, how do I get playoff tickets?
I really
don't see how the Bears will be much better next season. Even if
Trubisky turns out to be good, I doubt he'll play much next year.
The Bears could have really used those 3rd and 4th
round picks this season.
To say nothing of Tim Tebow
Recently
the Jets reached for Geno Smith and the Browns did the same thing for
Johnny Manziel. But at least in their cases, they didn't spend
multiple draft choices to reach for a quarterback.
Moving on up
Of
course, other teams were going up the draft ladder to get a
quarterback. The Chiefs moved up to the 10th slot to
pick up Patrick Mahomes II and the Texans moved up to the 12th
pick to draft DeShaun Watson. The price was also high for these
guys.
And this year's draft winner is...Brock Osweiler?
The
Chiefs gave the Bills their 1st and 3rd draft
choices in this year's draft, plus next year's number 1. The Texans
gave up their first round pick in this year's draft (25th
overall) and next year's first round pick. Maybe Brock Osweiler will
get some playing time in Cleveland after all.
After being pantsed, the Bears feel a draft
The
Browns, 49ers and Bears were three of the worst teams in football
last year. Of the three, the Bears look to be the ones who got
pantsed in the draft. I hope I'm wrong.
More
next time.
