Now that
the NFL 's regular season has finished and coaches are being fired, I
thought it might be good to reflect on the 2017 season and the
immediate aftermath. I'm a Bears fan, so I'll start there.
To the
surprise of nobody, the Bears fired head coach, John Fox. While that
came as no surprise, GM, Ryan Pace was extended through 2021.
Apparently that may help in the search for a new head coach. That
way the new head coach and Pace can be fired at the same time. While
Bears fans have had it rough, they can't come close to the suffering
Cleveland Browns fans have suffered.
The Browns are so bad that.......
How bad
are the Cleveland Browns? Duty wants to change colors. And yet Hue
Jackson, like Fletch, lives as a head coach. How bad do you have to
be to be fired as an NFL head coach in Ohio? Jackson still has his
job and Bengals head coach, Marvin Lewis, signed a two year
extension. The only guy that has more job security than an NFL
coach in Ohio is the Pope. If Columbus gets an NFL team, Marc
Trestman should apply to coach it.
Will Roethlisberger be the only Big Ben in the playoffs?
The
Jacksonville Jaguars made the playoffs. Does that mean the NFL will
have a playoff game in London. It seems like the Jaguars have been
in the NFL's version of the witness protection program. Looks like
the NFL can't hide them any longer.
Least Inspiring cheer
At this
point, the Carolina Panthers are still up for sale. Head coach, Ron
Rivera, made the unusual move of leading the team in a cheer for team
owner, Jerry Richardson. Of course Richardson is selling the team
because of misconduct directed at female employees. Since the
Panthers are in the playoffs, maybe Ron can tell the team to win one
for the Groper.
Did the 49ers rob the Bears and Pats?
The San
Francisco 49ers seem to have made out like bandits this season. Not
only did they pillage Bears draft choices, they later picked QB,
Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo led the 49ers to 5 straight wins to
finish the season. The Bears being fleeced doesn't surprise me, but
the possibility of the Patriots being bit in the butt by a big move
does.
Tom
Brady looked almost human in the last part of the regular season.
His stats for the last five games were down quite a bit. If Brady
does succumb to Father Time, and he will. Garoppolo would be a handy
guy to have around.
Del Rio can blame it on Chucky
And
finally, it looks like the Raiders are going to hire Jon Gruden as
their head coach after firing Jack Del Rio. Del Rio's Raiders did go
6-10, but if he was in Cleveland, six wins should assure him of about
a decade of job security.
