Was it
only a year ago when Ryan pace made the gaffe of the NFL free agency
season when he grossly overpaid for quarterback/statue Mike Glennon?
While Pace was universally panned for his miscalculation of Mike
Glennon, his moving up to draft Mitch “Pretty Boy Assassin”
Trubisky may have set up what looks like a banner 2018 offseason.
The Nagy Effect?
It looks
more and more like Ryan Pace and former Bears head coach, John Fox,
weren't on the same page. With the hiring of new offensive minded
head coach, Matt Nagy, things seem to be falling in place. It seems
that Trubisky helped make the Bears head coaching job appealing
enough lure an offensive minded coach like Nagy to take the job.
Next up was getting Trubisky weapons to use.
The story of three (new) Bears
Jaguars
receiver, Allen Robinson, was considered to be the best wide receiver
available in free agency. He also looks to be better than anybody
available in the draft. The fact that the Bears got their man speaks
well of Pace and how the Bears are currently viewed by NFL folks in
general. Not stopping there, the Bears also signed the best regarded
tight end in free agency, Eagles tight end/Super Bowl TD passer, Trey
Burton. And topping off the day, the Bears also signed slot receiver
Taylor Gabriel.
Curb your enthusiasm
This
will probably be the best day of the Bears 2018 season, and I'm not
being totally snarky about it. They made up a ton of ground in their
division, there's just more to go.
What next?
By
filling in their receiver needs through free agency, the Bears can
fill their needs on the other side of the ball through the draft. The
only offensive player I see the Bears possibly using the eighth
overall pick on is Notre Dame guard, Quenton Nelson. An edge rusher
figures to be their most pressing need. As I'm writing this I see
from the Chicago Tribune the Bears are going resign Prince Amukamara.
In my opinion, that's not a bad move.
The Case of Cousins
In other
free agency news, Kirk Cousins appears to be on the cusp of signing a
massive three year, fully guaranteed contract with the Vikings. That
will suck up a huge amount of cap space for the Vikings and I'm not
at all sure he'll do any better than Case Keenum did at a fraction of
the cost.
Speaking
of Keenum, he's heading to the Broncos. He'll help, but it looks
like the Broncos have closed the barn door after the horse is out.
McCown outlasts Cutler
Not to
be left out of the quarterback carousel, the Jets are going to resign
Josh McCown. But hey, he's better than Geno Smith. The Jets look
like a lock to draft a quarterback in the first round.
Glennon actually contributed to the Bears
And
finally, it looks like the man who was bad enough to accelerate the
development of Mitch Trubisky, Mike Glennon, will sign with the
Arizona Cardinals. Mike's ineptitude shouldn't be overlooked when
evaluating the progress of the Bears. And surprisingly, Glennon
might improve the Cardinals. That means they really need to do
something at that position.
