Reflections on what could have been for the Cubs and what's ahead for the White Sox

Sunday resulted in another loss for the White Sox.  This time it was in the form of a 3-2 defeat to the Detroit Tigers.  There were some positives to be found.  Sox starter, James Shields, took the loss but again, didn’t pitch badly.  James went seven innings and allowed three earned runs.  Shields has lowered his ERA to 4.54.  Not particularly impressive, but it is heading in the right direction and he his providing some stability for the Sox young staff.

Starting help on the horizon for the White Sox

Dylan Covey gets the start on Monday.  Covey is coming off the best start of his career, winning his last decision.  That comes off an impressive stint in AAA.  Maybe Covey can be a useful piece after all.

Carlos Rodon should be able to join the Sox rotation in June.  Add him to up and coming star, Reynaldo Lopez and the White Sox rotation suddenly doesn’t seem so rancid.  Lucas Giolito has had terrible command, resulting in terrible results.  I suspect that as much as anything Giolito needs regular work.  The bullpen is still erratic and the hitting bad, but slowly things are getting better.

Maybe even some catching help too

Welington Castillo had a really bad week.  After being benched for not running out a popup, Welly got hit with an 80 game suspension for PED use.  I guess that’s one way to make people forget about that whole not running out a popup thing.

I’ve heard a lot about Sox catching prospect, Zach Collins, but Seby Zavela’s stats are roughly equal to Collins.  Both are in the Sox AA affiliate at Birmingham.  Maybe we will get to see Zavela in a Sox uniform when he comes off the 7 day DL.

These guys could be helping the Cubs

Do you remember the guy the Cubs traded for Justin Wilson?  He’s playing third base for the Tigers and doing a good job.  Jeimer Candelario has an OPS of .896 and a WAR of 1.5.  He was blocked with the Cubs, but maybe he was underestimated as a prospect.

Speaking of former Cubs third basemen that were blocked by Kris Bryant, how about Christian Villanueva?  Villanueva has pounded 14 home runs and has an OPS of .881 and a WAR of 1.3.  Anybody else wish Kris Bryant was in right field, Candelario or Villanueva was at third, and Jason Heyward was still in St. Louis?

Turn about is fair play

One quick NFL note.  Former Bears QB, Mike Glennon recently threw up on the Arizona Cardinals practice field.  That’s role reversal.  When he was with the Bears, Glennon made Bears fans throw up.
