Lester does everything but get the win for the Cubs while Rodon keeps the White Sox rolling

Jon Lester had an excellent game.  After a really rocky beginning, he gave the Cubs a quality start, made an excellent play on a line drive back through the box, picked off a base runner and drove two runs to give the Cubs a 4-3.  He did everything but get the win.  The usually reliable Steve Cishek gave up a game tying home run to Kevin Plawecki to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.  Not to worry, the Cubs scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-4 lead.  The final score was 7-4.

Upon further review

After Anthony Rizzo doubled on a line drive that, upon review, was determined to kick off the left field foul line, Ben Zobrist double off the left field wall to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead.  The Cubs added another run on a Wilson Contreras fielder’s choice.

Forget more cowbell, give me more Rizzo

Anthony Rizzo launched a home run into the right field bleachers in the eighth to go with an RBI double in the first.  In total, Rizzo had three hits, a homer and two doubles.  Daniel Murphy also has two hits, as is his custom.  Ben Zobrist and Javy Baez also added two hits.  It seems like everything fits in place in the Cubs batting order with the arrival of Daniel Murphy.  A Cubs lineup of Murphy-Baez-Rizzo hitting one, two, three seems to be the so effective even Joe Maddon might not mess with it.  It will be an interesting study.

And another under the radar guy is Jesse Chavez

The Mets made things interesting in the ninth, but Jesse Chavez came on with the bases loaded and one out and struck out the final two Mets hitters to pick up the save.  The Cubs beat the Mets with Noah Synderguaard on the mound.  When I saw the Cubs were going to face Synderguaard and Jacob de Grom in this two game series, I was apprehensive, but the Cubs lineup is really on a role.\

White Sox and Rodon can make it anywhere

The White Sox are clearing getting better, and doing so rapidly.  More evidence of that was presented Monday night when they defeated the Yankees 6-2.  Carlos Rodon continued the Sox streak of excellent starts, going seven innings and allowing only a two-run homer to Gleyber Torres.  Rodon allowed only one other hit and walked four while striking out only two.  Still, Rodon pitched an excellent game.  I like his mound presence.  He’s like Jon Lester lite to me.  That’s a good thing.  He’s competitive, but not as volatile.  Plus he has outstanding stuff.

More good pensmanship

The much maligned (by me, unfortunately) Juan Minaya worked 1.2 scoreless innings and Xavier Cedeno closed things out.  The Sox pen continues to turn in solid work.

Is Moncada an RBI guy?

Yoan Moncada got things going offensively for the Sox with a two run double.  I believe Moncada is better suited to hit lower in the lineup.  He seems to concentrate better with men on base and when a pitch has to throw him strikes.  Nicky Delmonico drove in the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly.  Tim Anderson drove in an insurance run in the eighth with a double to right.  The Sox added to more runs in the ninth when the Yankees defense imploded.

More Tim Anderson and Adam Engel

The Sox didn’t commit any errors and Tim Anderson had a really good game in the field, making a couple of excellent plays.  He’s really settled down defensively.  I’ve been doing kind of an Adam Engel watch lately.  Engel went 3-4 Monday night, which raised his average to .240.  It doesn’t seem to be a fluke.  If the improvement is real, the Sox have another useful part for a future contending team.
