Bears defense adds Big Mack to diet, more hope for the White Sox and Cubs go solo, again

Bears GM, Ryan Pace, might not be the best GM in the NFL, but he certainly isn’t bashful.  The Bears are reportedly picking up Raiders LB, Kahlil Mack for two first round draft choices.  Bears fans may be reminded of how Pace traded a bunch of draft picks in last year’s NFL draft to move up one slot to draft Mitch Trubisky.  That Trubisky move may work out, though it’s impossible to move if Mitch would have been available in the Bears hadn’t traded up in the draft.

What Mack brings to the table

Mack seems to be exactly what a promising, but somewhat anonymous Bears defense needs to go from good to elite.  Mack is considered perhaps one of the five best defensive players in the NFL.  He also gets after the QB.  His sack totals for the last three seasons are: 15-11-10.5.  He also has never missed a game in his NFL career.  In that way he’s sort of the anti-Leonard Floyd.

Will they be ready for Aaron Rodgers?

Bears fans were generally optimistic going into the 2018 season.  The acquisition of Mack will take that enthusiasm to the next level.  How quickly Mack and first round draft choice, linebacker Roquan Smith, are able to contribute will be interesting to see.  I wish the Bears didn’t have their season opener against the Packers.

Do the Bears have one of the linebacking units in the NFL?

A linebacking corps of Kahlil Mack, Leonard Floyd, Danny Travathan and Roquan Smith might be one of the best in the NFL.  It’s come a long ways from a couple of years ago.  The Bears open their season on September 9.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Bears team play a preseason with so many of their stars taking so few snaps.  I’m looking forward to this Bears season more than any in a long time.

Good for the Bears, but how about the Raiders?

I also wish I had picked the Bears defense in my fantasy football draft.  Mack should get the Bears more sacks, and an improved pass rush should lead to more turnovers.  Also, is it time for Raiders fans to worry about the return of Jon Gruden?

Another rerun

The Cubs are playing in Pennsylvania again.  You know what that means; the offense consists of one solo home run and an extra inning loss.  The Cubs lost to the Phillies 2-1 in 10 innings Friday night.  The Cubs run came courtesy of a Javy Baez homer.

Jose Quintana pitched well, giving up only one run in six innings.  Jose struck out seven.  Steve Cishek gave up the game ending home run to Asdrubal Cabrera.  Maybe Kris Bryant’s return to the lineup will jump start the Cubs offense.

Forget Mike Hargrove, Michael Kopech is the human rain delay

Michael Kopech got the start for the White Sox against the Red Sox Friday night.  Kopech and the White Sox did not disappoint.  Unfortunately, the weather did.  After Kopech had pitched three scoreless innings, the rain came.  A rain delay of two hours and nine minutes meant the end of Kopech’s night.  Still, it was nights of positives as the White Sox went on to defeat the Red Sox 6-1.

More pitching

In addition to Kopech’s three scoreless innings, Dylan Covey also held the Red Sox scoreless for three innings.  Juan Minaya gave up a solo home run to Andrew Benintendi during his two innings of work.  Rookie, Ian Hamilton made his first major league appearance and closed thing out for the White Sox in the ninth.

Is this guy the White Sox new closer?

Hamilton has had a great season in AA and AAA.  In his combined work in AA and AAA, he’s struck out 62 in 38 innings.  He walked only 16 and had a WHIP of 1.05.  I loved his mound presence Friday night.  He got the ball and went right after the hitters.  I wondered who the White Sox would ultimately use as a closer; I think this could be the guy.

Wait till next year

As for the White Sox offense, most of it came via a two-run homer by Yoan Moncada and a three-run shot by Matt Davidson.  Moncada’s homer was his 17th while Davidson’s was his 19th.  The White Sox are actually fun to watch again.  Next year really should be interesting.
