Patrick Mahomes leads the young batch of NFL quarterbacks

For Patrick Mahomes the Chiefs 37-21 win over the Cleveland Browns was another day at the office.  Mahomes threw for 375 yards and three TDs as the Chiefs ran their record to 8-1. For some quarterbacks, the numbers Mahomes put up would be a career game, for Mahomes it’s become expected.

Mahomes is best

Mahomes is the complete package for an NFL quarterback.  He has an eclectic arm, mobility and even the intangibles a great NFL quarterback needs.  He also is surrounded by great coaching and fantastic players at the skill positions.  All this has resulted in Mahomes throwing for 29 TDs against 7 interceptions and a passing rating of 116.7.  Mahomes looks to be the next great quarterback in the NFL.

But Watson is also a star in the making

DeShaun Watson of the Houston Texans may not be Mahomes, but he’s may be Patrick Mahomes lite.  Watson’s stats were somewhat subdued in the Texans 19-17 win over the Broncos.  Watson completed 17 of 24 passes for 213 yards and two TDs, but it was enough.  Watson doesn’t have quite the physical tools of Mahomes, or the supporting cast, but he does have DeAndre Hopkins, which is a huge edge. Watson looks to be a top starter for years to come.

Browns progress is tied to Mayfield

The Cleveland Browns have been a better team since Baker Mayfield took the quarterback reins form Tyrod Taylor.  Like Mahomes and Watson, Mayfield shows excellent leadership.  Mayfield threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns loss to the Chiefs.  Not bad statistics, just not good enough Sunday.  Mayfield shows excellent mobility in the pocket among other attributes.  The Browns are set at quarterback for years.

Is the Bears wait for a good QB over?

Mitch Trubisky has shown growth in his second year as the Bears quarterback.  The Bears didn’t need a lot form Trubisky in Sunday’s 41-9 win over the Bills.  Mitch threw only 20 passes, completing 12 with one touchdown and one interception.  Trubisky’s passer rating is at 96.1, up from 77.5 from last year.  While Trubisky still misses some easy throws, he does have outstanding running ability and his legs are a weapon.  Sometimes Trubisky has a tendency to rely too much on his legs.  Still, the Bears seemingly never ending quest for a good quarterback seems to have come to an end.

Jets flying at a low altitude, but are at least off the ground

Sam Darnold has a terrible day in the Jets 13-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins.  Sam threw four interceptions, including a pick six.  Darnold has had some ups and downs in his rookie season, as should be expected.  Through nine games, Darnold has thrown for 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.  Darnold is hamstrung by a lack of talent around him but has shown enough poise to show the Jets he’s not Geno Smith 2.0.

For Cardinals, everything is coming up Rosen

The Arizona Cardinals knew they had a problem at quarterback going into the 2018 season and tried to address it in various ways.  They signed free agents, Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon, as well as drafting Josh Rosen in the first round of the draft.  The Bradford signing proved to a disaster.  The Cardinals recently cut him.  Mike Glennon continues to add to his value by staying away from the playing field.  That leaves Josh Rosen.  Rosen has led the Cardinals to a couple of wins but it’s hard to get a gage on Rosen’s ceiling at this point.  Rosen has six touchdown passes compared with six interceptions.  He currently carries a passing rating of 69.9.  Rosen doesn’t have a lot to work with, but gets high marks for his poise.  The Cardinals will give him time to establish himself, and hopefully provide him with more tools at his disposal.

Bills are past due for a good quarterback

Nothing makes a fan base pine for a new quarterback than watching Nathan Peterman start for their team.  Peterman threw three inceptions in the Bills 41-9 loss to the Bears.  Peterman was starting because rookie quarterback, Josh Allen, was sidelined with an elbow injury.

Allen has appeared in six games this season, starting five.  Josh has supplemented mediocre passing stats with his running ability.  Allen has thrown for two touchdowns while running for three more.  H’s also thrown five picks and has a passer rating of 61.8.  Allen’s development is being rushed because of the lack of other viable quarterback options on the bills.  Long term that should accelerate his progress.

Stay tuned...

In summary, Mahomes is a budding super star and Watson is a star who could also become a super star.  Mitch Trubisky and Baker Mayfield have star potential.  While the jury is still out on Darnold, Rosen and Allen they look to have the potential to be solid NFL quarterbacks.  This should be an interesting storyline for the NFL for years to come.
