Though the buzz about QBs wasn’t as great in the 2019 NFL
draft as it was in its 2018 counterpart, the biggest stories still revolved
around QBs. After Giants GM, David
Gettleman, used the sixth pick in the draft to infuriate Giants fans by picking
Duke QB, Daniel Jones, he doubled down on irritating the Giants fan base. Gettleman said that Jones may sit on the
bench for three seasons before he takes the reins of the Giants offense, a la
Aaron Rodgers. The takeaway from that is
draft Saquon Barkley of your fantasy team if you get a chance.
Cardinals buy high, sell low
The Arizona Cardinals did indeed trade Josh Rosen to the
Miami Dolphins for a second round pick.
I’m not a QB guru, but based on Rosen’s draft status last season and the
fact he survived a year behind the Cardinals offensive line he seems like a
pretty good value for what the Fish gave up.
It seems like a trade the Giants should have made. I suspect their fans would be far happier
today if they had.
Redskins win waiting game
Redskins fans seem generally happy after the draft. Ohio State QB, Dwayne Haskins fell to them at
the 15th pick of the draft.
Lots of people with draft expertise seem to think he’s the best QB in
the draft. The only thing that would
worry me if I was a Skins fan is Redskins owner, Dan Snyder really wanted
Haskins.
Chiefs look to get over the Hill
The Kansas City Chiefs got some bad news when an audio
tape of Tyreek Hill surfaced of him threatening his girlfriend and son. He’s suspended from the team indefinitely and
may not ever come back. The Chiefs responding by drafting Mecole Hardman in the
second round. He’s a burner, showing
4.33 speed at the combine, but the likelihood of his being as productive as
Hill is slight.
The 2019 draft came early
As for the Bears, they won the draft before it
started. Picking up Khalil Mack and
Anthony Miller last season looks really good now. I think of it as getting Mack in the first
round and Miller in the second. Bears
GM, Ryan Pace, has a knack for targeting his guy and trading up to get
him. He did that with Mitch Trubisky in
the 2017 draft and Anthony Miller in the 2018 draft. And Pace did it again in the 2019 draft.
Montgomery becomes Pace's ward
Pace traded up in the third round to get Iowa running
back, David Montgomery. Montgomery is a
good receiver coming out of the backfield and Pace obviously sees him as a good
fit for the Bears system. Montgomery
will share time with Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis.
Bears draft Ridley, believe it or not
The Bears drafted a guy you may have heard of in the
fourth round. They added Georgia WR,
Riley Ridley. Ridley gets praise for his
route running ability and should give the Bears even more depth at WR.
Corners and a geography question
Kansas State corner, Duke Shelley was selected by the
Bears in round six. Scouting reports indicate
he could be a sound depth pick. The Bears
closed things out by drafting RB Kerrith Whyte from Florida Atlantic and cornerback
Stephen Denmark from Valdosta State in the seventh round. Whyte has potential as a return man. As for Denmark, I’m trying to figure out
where Valdosta State is.
