The start of the NFL season also means the start of Fantasy Football season. I drafted my team Monday night. For the first time, I did a little research and had in mind a draft strategy. This year I’m in a12 person, PPR league with a super flex. With that in mind it was almost an automatic that I would draft two capable starting QBs. I also had some guys in mind I thought I could get as sleepers. I ended up with mixed results.
This year I'm Mahomeless
I wanted to get Patrick Mahomes, (Like everybody else) and was hoping to get him in the second round. That hope was blown up when Mahomes was taken with the second overall pick. Barkley, McCaffrey and Kamara were taken in the first four picks. DeAndre Hopkins was taken with the fifth pick so I was torn between Ezekiel Elliott and Nick Chubb. In light of Elliott’s contract issues, I went with Chubb.
I hope JuJu will bear Fruit
With the second round I wanted to get a number one receiver. I went with JuJu Smith – Shuster. Hopefully he picks up some of Antonio Brown’s action.
Upon further review, I may have picked the wrong Colt
In the third round I went for the Eagles’ TE, Zach Ertz. Going on to the fourth round, I went for a QB, namely Baker Mayfield. I think he has a high ceiling. I’m not proud of my fifth round pick. I took T Y Hilton. If anything I should have taken his teammate, RB Marlon Mack, who was still available.
These may have been my best draft picks
I do feel better about my sixth pick, Falcons WR, Calvin Ridley. Look for Ridley to get some of Julio Jones’ targets this season. In the seventh round, I went for Eagles RB, Jordan Howard. I thought he might be a sleeper going into the draft. Another player I had targeted was my seventh round pick, Jimmy Garoppolo. The plan is for him to be my super flex guy for most of the season.
NFC North Time
In the ninth round I took Matt Stafford. Since I will be going with two QBs almost all weeks, I figured Stafford will be my super flex guy when Mayfield and Garoppolo have bye weeks. I gave attention to the defense with my next pick, picking the Bears defense. It might have been a little soon, but I figure they’ll give me an edge most weeks.
My Flex is actually Bore-Flex
In rounds 11 and 12 I went for depth at WR, going with Donte Moncrief and Courtland Sutton. Both seem to have some upside and could be helpful during bye weeks for Smith – Shuster and Hilton or Ridley.
Going Back to the Future.....
Needing some depth at RB, I went back in time, picking Adrian Peterson. If I can find a flux capacitor that could be a useful pick. I used the 14th pick to backup a backup TE in the form of Packers TE, Jimmy Graham.
Hey, I was tired
Winding things down, I took Jalen Richard, hoping he may catch a few passes out of the Raiders backfield. And finally, I used the 16th pick to add Randall Cobb to my mix. I don’t think that adds a lot, but I was tired.
ESPN is not impressed
So, I went QB heavy, but I’m concerned about my number two RB. That needs some attention. ESPN wasn’t impressed with my draft. I’m currently and ranked 10th out of 12 teams. Well, I’m okay with being an underdog.
