While
Bears fans are understandably upset with the regression of Mitch
Trubisky, they aren’t the only fan base that has seen regression in
their team’s quarterback. While some relatively young QBs
regressed, some veteran QBs just started looking old. But we’ll
start with Mitch.
To Err is Human, to Double down on an Err is the Bears
The
Bears seem committed to Trubisky in 2020. That’s right boys, when
making a huge mistake,
double down on it. Ryan Pace
seems like he’s trying to make up for bad judgment by virtue of
sheer stubbornness. It seems like Trubisky could be in the league
for 10 years and Bears fans would still be hearing about his limited
college career. When does the statute of limitations on that
excuse run out? Admittedly, head coach, Matt Nagy, did a dismal job
of play calling, but still, Mitch regressed. One
guy on the Bears roster that should be glad
Trubisky is still on the Bears roster is Adam Shaheen.
If it weren’t for Trubisky, more focus would be on what a bust
Shahen
is as a second round pick.
Winston throws for 37 TDs but seven are for the other team
While
the Bears
seemed committed
to Trubisky for another season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem a bit
more disenchanted with Jameis Winston. Jameis
is the founding member of the NFL’s 30-30 Club. Winston threw for
33 TDs and
30 interceptions, including seven pick sixes. He
could be coming to an NFL franchise near you next season.
Well, he's still better than Johnny Manziel
Baker
Mayfield seemed poised to have a breakout season in 2019, but it
turned out to be a breakdown season instead. Odell
Beckham Jr. wasn’t happy with Eli Manning when he was with the
Giants in 2018. He caught six TD passes that season. He caught four
from Mayfield with the Browns in 2019. Of course, Mayfield gets
somewhat of a pass because of the coaching ineptitude of Freddie
Kitchens. Still there is cause for concern in Cleveland. After all,
when it comes to quarterbacking, all hype and no production equals
Johnny Manziel.
The annual question, "Is age finally catching up to Tom Brady?"
Tom
Brady had a QB rating of 88.0 in 2019, his lowest since 2013. Does
that mean he’s in decline? Probably, but I wish he was the Bears
quarterback anyway. Philip
Rivers actually had a higher QB rating than Tom Brady at 88.8, but
seemed older than Tom. Probably because he threw 20 picks against 23
TDs. Brady still protected the ball, throwing for 24 TDs while
tossing eight interceptions.
What about these guys?
Two
other big name quarterbacks, Ben Roethlisberger and Cam Newton,
missed most of the 2019 campaign due to injuries. Their future is
cloudy. All in all, 2019 was a year of transition in the hierarchy
of NFL quarterbacks.
