White Sox continue to roll, the Cubs win in Fenway, and the Bears get Day Three help
It was good
day in Chicago sports. Both the Cubs and White Sox won, and the
Bears didn't do anything that had me scratching my head. I'll start
with the Sox.
Jose Abreu gets on track
The Sox
beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 6-4 in 10 innings. The long
ball played a key role in the Sox win. Jose Abreu had his first 2
home runs of the year and Melky Cabrera added a solo shot in the 10th
to give the Sox a 5-4 lead. Avisail Garcia added an RBI triple to
provide the final run.
Good work, mostly
Sox
starter, Derek Holland, was again effective, going 6.1 innings,
giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 4. Anthony
Swarzak went .2 scoreless innings and Tommy Kahnle added a scoreless
inning. The Sox were up 4-2 going into the bottom of the 9th
when closer, David Robertson gave up to runs to tie the game at 4-4.
It was Robertson's first blown save in 6 attempts.
If at first you don't succeed
After
the Sox picked up their 2 runs in the 10th, Robertson came
on to pitch a scoreless 10th to pick up the victory. With
each win the idea of the Sox selling off parts becomes more remote.
They've managed to be in first place despite the absence of Carlos
Rodon. They might have a little bit of help on the farm for a
change. Yesterday I said Quintana might stick around. The same
might be true of Derek Holland.
Good enough
Once
again the Cubs didn't get a quality start, but still managed to pick
up a win. John Lackey started for the Cubs and went 6 innings,
giving 4 runs. Hanley Ramirez got to him for a 469 foot homer. Adam
Benintendi also hit a long home run. Fortunately, the Cubs also had
the long ball going for them. Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist and Miguel
Monero all connected for the Cubs.
That Wade Davis seems pretty good
The Cubs
once again got some good work out of the pen. Koji Uehara, Hector
Rondon and Wade Davis all pitched a scoreless inning. Davis picked
up his 6th save in 6 tries. So far that Jorge Soler for
Wade Davis trade is looking really good.
Looking ahead
John
Lackey picked up the win, running his record to 2-3. The Cubs
starters have been slow coming out of the gate. Hopefully that can
be rectified. If not, the Cubs might have to trade for some pitching
help in mid season.
Tell me about the 3 Bears
I don't
know much about college football, but I know the Bears drafted an
offensive lineman, a safety and a running back in the third day of
the NFL draft. The safety is Eddie Jackson from Alabama. He could
help the Bears secondary immediately. The running back, Tarik Cohen
is out of North Carolina A&T. He's a small back that could
provide a change of pace for the Bears offense. Jordan Morgan is a
huge offensive left tackle who dominated in Division II. He could
provide depth at tackle or guard for the Bears. All in all, I think
Ryan Pace did okay on day three of the draft. I'm sure he'll sleep
better knowing that.
Limited options
Dwyane
Wade is checking with the Bulls front office to decide if he wants to
come back or not. I'm thinking he'll be back. He won't get 23
million dollars anywhere else.
More
next time.
