Diary of a Chicago Sports Fan

Cubs roll, deja vu for Quintana, Cavs go all Bulls, and what's Tebowing?

The Cubs will go into their home opener with a record of 4-2 after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 7-4. The Cubs opened fast with 4 runs in the first and a single run in the second. Kyle Schwarber and Ben Zobrist homered for the Cubs.

I'd like to buy a starting pitcher for about 150 million.

Jake Arrieta went 7 innings and gave up three runs on a three shot by Ryan Braun. Arrieta is in his walk year and is making a strong argument for getting a high dollar, long term deal. I've been a little negative about signing Arrieta term long term deal, but he's starting to make me a believer. If Jake would take a Jon Lester type deal, I think the Cubs should go for it. Jake's velocity is down a little bit, but I'd still take my chances with him. However, with Jake's agent being Scott Boras, I'm not sure the Cubs could get Arrieta for Lester money.

Jason's Bat Lives!

Jason Heyward had 2 hits and 3 RBIs for the Cubs Sunday. Not only that, he's making hard contact. That's a potentially huge development for the Cubs.

Been there, done that

On the south side, Jose Quintana is back to doing what he does, pitching well without getting a win. Jose went 6.1 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7. Nate Jones gave up a 2 run homer to Miguel Sano in the 8th to put the game out of reach.

Southern Knights

Avisail Garcia drove in the Sox only run. Meanwhile, the Sox AAA team, the Charlotte Knights, are off to a hot start, going 4-0. They're doing it with hitting. Yoan Moncada is 8-20 thus far with 1 homerun. The potential bad news is he's struck out 8 times. Also, prime pitching prospects, Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito got off to rough starts in their respective starts. Moncada, Lopez and Gioloto all bear watching. A lot of the Sox future depends on them.

Cavs Cave

I've been on the Bulls case for blowing 4th quarter leads, but the Cleveland Cavs performed a monumental meltdown Sunday, blowing a 26 point 4th quarter lead before losing to the Atlanta Hawks in overtime. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant is back in the Golden State lineup. If the Cavs make the NBA Finals and meet the Warriors, I think the Warriors won't lose again.

But it might make for a good tee shirt

Tim Tebow hit his second homer in three games as a Mets farmhand. Maybe hitting a homerun will eventually be called, “Tebowing”. Probably not.

More next time.
