Cubs celebration continues, Sox farm news, Bulls win and Bears cut a corner |
After a
wait of 108 years, it seems only right that the Cubs championship
banner raising ceremony be delayed. After a rain delay, the Cubs did
indeed, to the delight of the sellout crowd, and Cubs fans
everywhere, raise their championship banner. After that, the Cubs
again delighted their fans with a 3-2 win over the LA Dodgers.
Conditions
were less than ideal for hitting, but Kris Bryant put the Cubs up 1-0
in the 3rd with a double into the left field corner,
scoring Kyle Schwarber. Jon Lester put the Cubs up 2-0 with a
bases loaded RBI groundout in the in the 4th.
The plot thickens
The
Dodgers came back with 1 in the 6th. They mounted a
serious threat when they loaded the bases in the 7th on
2 Carl Edwards Jr. walks and a catcher's interference by Willson
Contreras. Justin Grimm came on and managed to escape the bases
loaded, no outs situation without the Dodgers scoring. A throwing
error by Addison Russell allowed the Dodgers to tie the score in the
8th.
Wade
Davis came on and pitched a scoreless 9th for the Cubs.
In the bottom of the 9th, John Jay led off with a single
and was driven in on Anthony Rizzzo's 2 out RBI single to left. It
was Rizzo's first RBI of the season.
Looking good
A few
things of note from the game. While Jon Lester no doubt misses David
Ross, he and Willson Contreras seem to have a decent working
relationship. Contreras made a great play on a dribbler towards the
mound in a key situation in the 6th to get the Cubs out of
a jam. It was a play that the pitcher normally would make, but both
Lester and Contreras know Lester's limitations in that regard.
Kyle
Schwarber was also spotted making a nice running catch on a line
drive into left center field. Kyle won't be the defensive disaster
some people thought he would be. Kyle also got on base all four
plate appearances. While his batting average is only .222, is OBP is
.382. He may not be a conventional lead off hitter, he's an
effective one.
To split hairs......
Addison
Russell made the Cubs 7th error of the season. The Cubs
currently rank 27th in MLB in fielding. Look for that to get better.
While Carl Edwards Jr. looked rattled last night, will probably be a
blip on the radar. The Cubs are 5-2 thus far, and still haven't
looked as sharp as they could be. So far, so good.
Chris Sale returns looking good
White
Sox prospect, Michael Kopech, made his first AA start Saturday night.
He went 4.1 innings, gave up 3 hits, 2 walks, 2 earned runs while
striking out 10. Not bad. Meanwhile Yoan Moncada hit his second
homerun for the Sox AAA affiliate, the Charlotte Knights. Moncada is
currently 9-23. A nice start for Yoan. He'll be playing next to
Jose Abreu in Chicago soon.
Do you believe in Magic? Not after last night.
In a
development I can make no sense of, the Bulls blew out the Orlando
Magic, 117-75. My biggest takeaway his the Magic must be really bad.
Of course, I thought that about the Knicks and Nets and the Bulls
managed to lose to them. Perhaps the biggest news from the game was
Jerian Grant, filling in for the injured Rajon Rondo, had 17 points
and 11 assists. The Bulls are now in good position to lose a first
round playoff series.
Bears not cheap, just cutting a corner
The
Bears have cut cornerback Tracy Porter. Porter started 15 games last
year and had 2 interceptions. He was arguably the Bears best
defensive back last season. The Bears have been upgrading their
secondary through agency, so the Bears cutting corners is probably a
good thing in this case
More
next time.
