Jay Cutler goes to a far better place (No, he didn't die)

It looks like our last view of Jay Cutler, before his retirement, won't be of his naked rear end after all. Jay has signed a one year deal with the Miami Dolphins. It will make for one of the more interesting story lines in the NFL this season. I like the move for Cutler and the Dolphins.

Reunited and it feels so good

I have not been a huge supporter of Jay in the past, but I do think he's been scapegoated by inept coaches. Yes, Cutler has been the master of the heart breaking interception but the one guy who has gotten him to limit turnovers has been Adam Gase. Cutler will be surrounded by better talent and better coaching than he's used to having.

And as an added bonus....

While Cutler was playing for the Bears, he had to beat, not only the opposing team, but also the inadequacies of the Bears coaching staff. By going to the Dolphins he's already overcome the second half of that equation. If Cutler does well with the Dolphins it will make the Bears organization look like Bozos. I'm not a betting man, but if I was, I'd go with that play every time.

And breathe

The Cubs stretched their lead over the Brewers to 1.5 games last night. The Cubs hung on to defeat the Giants 5-3. Jake Arrieta got the win and Wade Davis picked up the save. Javy Baez hit an inside the park home run on a ball that hit the wall in right center field and took a crazy hop.

Arrieta was pretty good, though far from dominant. Jake went 6.1 innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned while allowing 9 hits. Jake struck out 5 and didn't walk anybody. Pedro Strop, Brian Duensing and Wade Davis combined to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings. Duensing has been surprisingly good out of the Cubs pen. Somehow he's compiled a strikeout per 9 innings rate of 10.1 as compared to a career rate of around 6.

Don't write off the Brew Crew

The Brewers lost to the Twins last night by a score of 5-4. While people have generally given the NL Central division to the Cubs, I'm still a little uneasy. The Brewers have some great young talent. Brewers third baseman, Travis Shaw, is particularly impressive. He currently has a WAR of 3.7 and passes the eye test. I do wonder if their pitching will hold up.

And on the Southside...

The White Sox have been rocketing to the bottom of MLB in terms of wins. The Sox are 3-19 after the break. If you're a Sox fan don't worry about that. There are two players to watch, Yoan Moncada and Carlos Rodon. Both have been looking good recently. Moncada is still hitting below .200 but was hitting below .100 not long ago. f late. He's also looking good in the field and has excellent speed. He's a gold nugget in the White Sox muck.

Down in AAA, formerly highly touted Sox prospect, Lucas Giolito, has been pitching better. I can see him and Reynaldo Lopez in the Sox rotation before too long.

More next time.
