Trubisky and Moncada give Chicago sports fans hope

Bears fans got their first look at their new quarterback, Mitch Trubisky, and surprise, surprise he was good. Very good. Mitch was 18-25 with 1 TD pass and no picks. He also ran for 38 yards on 3 carries. The initial returns look like he may have been worth the price Ryan Pace paid for him. Is it possible the Bears long quarterback nightmare is over? As for the game itself, the Bears lost to the Broncos 24-17. While Trubisky looked great, the Bears are still the Bears.

Seem familiar?

With the game tied 17-17 and 1:43 left to play in the 4th quarter, the Broncos faced a third and 22 situation on the Bears 41. So they hand the ball to De'Angelo Henderson who goes off tackle for a touchdown. Looks like the Bears are prepping for more last minute losses. Prior to that touchdown run, Bears punter, Pat O”Donnell got called for an unnecessary roughness penalty to put the Broncos in excellent field position. What about Mike Glennon you say? Let's talk about that.

And you didn't like Cutler

As for raw stats, Glennon was 2-8 for 20 yards. Oh yea, he threw a pick 6 in his first series. As good as Trubisky looked, Glennon looked that bad. The raw tools are evident with Trubisky. The fact that he's contrasted with Glennon makes it more evident. All in all, if you asked Bears about how they felt about tonight's game on a scale of 1-10, I think most would say 8. The fact that Leonard Floyd looked great getting a sack ads to the enthusiasm.

A glimpse into the future?

The White Sox completed a three game sweep of the Astros with a 3-2 win over the Astros in 11 innings. Yoan Moncada was the star for the Sox. Moncada's 9th inning home run tied the game at 2, and his RBI single drove in Leury Garcia with the game winner. Moncada looks to be the real deal.

Not bad and getting better

Some have said Moncada is struggling but while is batting average is low, is other stats are surprisingly good. His OBP is a very respectable .377 and his OPS is .754. Sox fans should sit back and enjoy is progress.

And more good news....

Another great thing about the Sox win was the performance of Carlos Rodon. Carlos went 8 innings, allowing only 2 runs and walking nobody. He has the talent to head a rotation for a long time. Reynaldo Lopez makes his Sox debut Friday night. More stuff for Sox fans to look forward to.

Is the sky falling?

The Cubs are now clinging to a one game lead over the Cardinals and a two game lead over the Brewers. It looks like Willson Contreras will be out for a couple of weeks. The Cubs have been scuffling even with Willson in the lineup. So where will production come from? I don't know, but it's obvious where it hasn't been coming from. Kyle Schwarber and Ben Zobrist.

Anytime Joe Maddon wants to break off his bromance with Schwarber, I'm good. The Cubs have been waiting all year for Schwarber. Enough already. Ben Zobrist has had a terrible season. He's been slowed down by injuries, but it's possible age is playing more of a factor than the Cubs want to admit. Joe Maddon likes to think outside the box, but maybe all the juggling this season has hurt the team. Maybe it's time to figure out the Cubs best lineup and ride it.  Joe's still the smartest guy in the room, it's just the room is smaller.

Why it matters

For those that say it doesn't matter if the Cubs make the playoffs or not, because the Nationals or Dodgers will wipe them out, I say that's ridiculous. In a short series with teams that are at least moderately close in talent anything goes. If the Cubs get to the playoffs, they have a punchers chance.

I'm ready for my close up.........

One other thing from the NFL. Roger Goodell made it to Gillette Stadium for the Pats preseason opener. I heard they were making another Death Wish movie, I just didn't know it was starring Roger Goodell.

More next time.
