Packers victory a la cart highlights the first Sunday in the NFL

In what may be the most gut wrenching defeat in the long history of the Bears – Packers rivalry, the Bears blew a 20-0 lead and lost to the Packers 24-23.  The Bears began their season in great fashion, with Mitch Trubisky leading the team down the field for a TD.  Trubisky capped the drive by running the ball in from two yards out.  The Bears other TD came when newly acquired LB, Kahlil Mack, intercepted a DeShone Kiser pass and ran it back 27 yards for the score.  Packers QB, and longtime Bears killer, Aaron Rodgers left the field on a cart in the first half but came back to kill the Bears once again.

Does Matt Nagy have no sense of history?

The Packers comeback culminated on a 75 yard pass from Rodgers to Randall Cobb for the game tying TD.  The extra point provided the winning margin.  New Bears head coach, Matt Nagy gave the Aaron Rodgers a gift of a last chance to beat the Bears.

With the ball around the Packers 15 yard line, late in the fourth quarter, the Bears went for a pass play that fell incomplete.  After that, the Bears settled for a field goal and a six point lead.  Anybody familiar with the Bears history with Aaron Rodgers knew that was a mistake.  The Bears should have used two running plays if necessary to pick up a first down and possibly run out the clock.

Catch the ball!

The Bears did give the Packers another gift after that when Kyle Fuller dropped an easy interception that could have closed the Packers out.  The Seahawks have a linebacker, Shaquem Griffin, with one hand.  The Bears have gone one better, they have a defensive back with no hands.

Maybe a new nickname is in order

After the Packers went ahead, the Bears had one more chance to pull out a win.  I have to say, Bears QB, Mitch Trubisky, looked scared.  The “Pretty Boy Assassin” looked like a pretty boy afraid of bullies.  That’s got to get better.

The Bears have some real talent, but they’ve got it pulled together.  Right now the Bears offense seems to have more flash than substance.  The defense looked great for a half.  Conditioning could be an issue.

And he has an all pro beard

Meanwhile, the most exciting player in the NFL had a great day.  That’s right, I’m talking Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Okay, Tyreek Hill is probably the most exciting player in the NFL, but Ryan Fitzpatrick had a career day in leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 48-40 win over the New Orleans Saints.  Fitzpatrick truly had a career day, but I have to think the Saints defense is really, really bad.  Fitzpatrick threw for 417 yards and four TDs while throwing no interceptions.  He even ran for 36 yards.  Drew Brees also seemed to defy his age, throwing for 439 yards and three scores.

The Cowboys and Bills are who I thought they were

I expected Nathan Peterman to bad, and he was.  The Baltimore Ravens swamped the Bills by a score of 47-3.  Peterman continues to be the Urban Sombrero of NFL QBs.  Hopefully you get the Seinfeld reference.  The Bills could be in for a long season.  The Cowboys could be in bad shape themselves.  I haven’t been high on their prospects and I didn’t see anything to change my mind in their 16-8 loss to the Panthers.

The Case of the missing Seahawks ground game

Case Keenum threw three picks and three TDs, but his performance was good enough to help the Broncos defeat the Seahawks 27-24.  The Broncos defense was keyed by Vonn Miller who recorded three sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered one.  The Broncos look to be mediocre this season, as do the Seahawks.  I read where the Seahawks were supposed to rely more on the ground game this season.  They had 16 rushes against the Broncos.  I don’t see a burgeoning ground game on the horizon.

So why does Sam Bradford make so much money?

Sam Bradford stayed intact for the whole game as the Arizona QB, but the Cardinals put only six points on the board.  The Redskins, behind new QB, Alex Smith, rang up 24 points in their win over the Cardinals.  Alex Smith was Alex Smith, throwing for two TDs and 255 yards with no picks.  Ancient running back, Adrian Peterson showed life, running for 96 years and a TD.  I actually like the Redskins chances better with Alex Smith at QB than Kirk Cousins.  Speaking of Cousins..

The Vikings do Vikings things

Cousins and the Vikings defeated the 49ers 24-16.  Cousins, like Alex Smith played mistake free football while 49ers QB, Jimmy Garoppolo threw three interceptions.  The Viking defense will be tough again this season.

The Chiefs may be the most exciting offensive team in the NFL

Tyreek Hill scored three touchdowns, two on pass receptions and one on a punt return as the Kansas City Chiefs blew by the LA Chargers 38-28.  Chiefs QB, Patrick Mahomes had a great game, throwing for four TDs.  Philip Rivers threw for 424 yards and three TDs in a losing effort.

Bengals press Colts Luck

Andrew Luck made his return to the Colts and threw 53 passes in the Colts 34-23 loss to the Bengals.  Bengals QB, Andy Dalton was solid in the win and RB, Joe Mixon ran for 95 yards and caught five passes for another 54 yards in Cincinnati’s victory.  The Bengals could surprise this year.

The day was even longer for Titans fans

In what might be an even worse opener than the Bears, the Tennessee Titans lost to the Miami Dolphins 27-20.  The game was delayed by weather twice and took seven hours to complete.  The Titans also lost three players to injuries, left tackle, Taylor Lewan suffered a concussion, TE, Delanie Walker looks to be out for the season with a leg or ankle injury and QB, and Marcus Mariota left the game with an elbow injury.

The Dolphins- Titans game did feature some big plays.  Jakeem Grant returned a kickoff 102 yards for a Dolphins TD and Darius Jennings took a Miami kickoff 94 yards for Titans score.  Dolphins WR, Kenny Stills, had a big day.  Stills caught four Ryan Tannehill passes, two for touchdowns.  The longest one was for 75 yards.

The Giants have some growing up to do

The Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the New York Giants 20-15.  Giants rookie RB, Saquan Barkley, ran for 106 yards in 18 attempts.  Most of it came on a 68 yard TD run.  The Jaguars got a big play from their defense in the form of a 32 yard pick six by LB, Myles Jack.  Jacksonville QB, Blake Bortles wasn’t particularly impressing, going 18-33 for 176 yards with one TD and one pick.

Ho hum, another Patriots win

Tom Brady showed the king is still alive in the Patriots 27-20 win over the Houston Texans.  Brady threw for three TDs and Ron Gronkowski caught seven passes for 123 yards and a TD.  Texans QB, DeShaun Watson, had a rough day, going 17-35 for 176 yards, one interception and one TD.

A tie is like kissing your sister, your ugly sister in this case

And finally, the Cleveland Browns came close to winning their opener, but played to a 21-21 tie with the Pittsburg Steelers.  The Steelers committed six turnovers and blew a 14 point fourth quarter lead.  Meanwhile, the Browns had a chance to win the game in overtime, but their 43 yard field goal attempt was blocked.  At least the tie broke the Browns 17 game losing streak.

Browns QB, Tyrod Taylor was 15-40 for 197 yards but supplemented his production with 77 yards rushing and one TD.  Ben Roethlisberger threw three interceptions.  Plenty of frustration to go around in this game.

And that’s a look at Sunday number one in the NFL.
