1. Ed “Too Tall” Jones.
Jones actually had done some boxing in his youth. When he came back from boxing he was
subsequently named to three Pro Bowls and three All Pro teams.
2. Willie McCovey. Willis
Mays and McCovey formed a potent duo in the 3-4 slots of the Giants lineup for
years.
3. Ed Mariaro. Ed
scored 11 TDs in four seasons with the Vikings but found more success as an
actor, most notably as Joe Coffey in Hill Street Blues.
4. Manny Trillo. Manny
was a six time all star, but in 17 seasons in the majors his total WAR was
11.3. Those numbers don’t seem to go
together.
5. Between the time Bill Russell and Dave Cowens played
center for the Celtics, this man played the post for them. (4 points)
6. Ken Landreaux. Ken
had a decent three years for the Twins, but overall, the return for Rod Carew
was pretty light.
7. Rick Mount. Rick
had a sweet jump shot, but that was pretty much it.
8. Cesar Tovar.
Actually, Cesar was really more than a utility man. He was more like a regular that started in a
lot of different positions.
9. Dan Issel. While
Issel was a capable player in the NBA he was a six time all star in the
ABA. Issel was a member of the 1975 ABA
champion Kentucky Colonels. In addition
to Issel, that team featured Artis Gilmore and Louie Dampier.
10. Duane Thomas. Duane
was immensely talented but various issues limited the duration of his
career. He took to not talking long
before Marshawn Lynch did.
