Diary of a Chicago Sports Fan

                        It's a Wonderful Baseball Life

Tonight's Chicago baseball was like putting on your slipping an watching one of your favorite old movies. It was nice and relaxing, without a lot suspense. Both Chicago teams won in a laugher.

Looks like a Bears - Steelers game in reverse

After being swept by the Pirates in Chicago recently, the Cubs rolled into Pittsburgh and pounded the Pirates 14-3. Brett Anderson was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion running his record to 2-0. Anderson went 6 innings and gave up 3 earned runs. That was plenty good enough.

Jason becoming a nightmare to pitchers

Jason Heyward was again a key to the offense with a homer and 4 RBIs. Addison Russell had a career high 4 hits and Ben Zobrist added 3 RBIs. I suspect there are going to be quite a few games like this for the Cubs. While the loss of Dexter Fowler will be felt, a full season of Kyle Scwarber and Willson Contreras, plus improvement by Jason Heyward should more than make up for the loss.

PEDs shrink Bucs playoff chances

The Pirates are missing star center fielder, Starling Marte who is serving an 80 game suspension for using banned substances. The loss of Marte greatly hurts the Pirates playoff chances. The chances of the Pirates making a run at the Cubs in the division went from slim to almost nil.

The Renteria Effect?

Somehow the White Sox keep plugging along at around .500. The Sox 12-1 win over the Royals put the Sox at exactly .500, with a record of 9-9. Matt Davidson led the offense with a homer and double and 4 RBIs. Tim Anderson had 3 hits while Jose Abreu added two.

Jake Arrieta Lite?

Miguel Gonzalez was strong again, going 8 innings and allowing only one unearned run on only 2 hits. The win ran Gonzalez's record to 3-0. Gonzales walked only one while striking out 5. While the Sox getting Gonzalez from the Orioles might not be in the same category as the Cubs getting Arrieta from them, it's not bad.

Look for sanctions

The Brewers Eric Thanes has hit 7 homers against the Reds in the month of April. He's hitting the Reds staff so hard it's like he's a member of the Cubs.

Like old times

Derrick Rose was seen court side in Chicago watching the Bulls – Celtics playoff game Sunday night. It was like he was still with the Bulls.

How Peppers relates to the Bears

Michigan's Jabrill Peppers had a diluted sample at the NFL draft combine. Maybe he could fit in with the Bears. They go for guys with diluted talent.

More next time.
