The
weather has been the big story in the early part of this MLB season.
Anthony Rizzo voiced support for a shorter season, even going so far
as to say he's take less money. That's something baseball should
consider. Not only is the weather wrecking havoc with the schedule,
even the games being played are impacted to the point to what's on
the field only somewhat resembles baseball. When it's to the point
the players look like they're ready to hit the slopes or rob a
convenience store, it's not quite the same.
Neither rain, nor snow, wait, that's the mail, not baseball
While
the early season has been impacted, the effects of the weather will
show up later in the year when doubleheaders pile up. The White Sox
were snowed out of three games in Minnesota recently. That will
result a log jam of extra games later in the season. The White Sox
don't figure to be in the race for a playoff slot, but the Twins do.
Reducing the season to 154 games and starting about 10 days later
makes sense. Of course, that's predicated on everybody making less
money. That's the fly in the ointment.
Is Baez actually about to reach his potential?
On the
field, the Cubs have won their last two games and seem to be heading
for a semblance of consistency. Albert Almora has batted leadoff and
played center field for the last two games. He picked up one hit in
Thursday's game and four hits in Friday's game. I'd like to see him
stay there for a while. The real story on the Cubs, however, has been
Javy Baez. Baez has been the most dynamic player on the Cubs for a
while. Baez is among the MLB leaders in home runs with six. He also
is one of the most exciting players in baseball in the field and on
the bases. If he stops giving away at bats, like he has recently, he
could be the best player on the Cubs, which is saying something.
A Trayce of hope for the White Sox?
In White
Sox news, the Sox traded Tyler Saladino to the Milwaukee Brewers for
cash considerations. In a separate move, they also picked up
outfielder, Trayce Thompson who was with the Oakland A's.
Previously, Thompson was with the Sox and was sent to the Dodgers in
the trade for Todd Frazier. Thompson has a lifetime batting average
of .231 with an OPS of .745. Current White Sox center fielder, Adam
Engel, was a career batting average of .166 with an OPS of .510.
Thompson may not be a great offensive player, but compared to Engel,
he looks like Mike Trout. I'd like to see Thompson get a shot in
center field.
Happy Gilmore was right, the Price was wrong.
The
Cincinnati Reds made news by firing manager, Bryan Price. The Reds
are off to a terrible start at 3-15. Price was in his fifth season
with the team as manager. Price is probably most remembered for
dropping 77 F-bombs in an interview. The most games any of his teams
won was 76. When your F-bombs exceed your team's wins, that's not a
good thing.
Well, there's a spot now.
In NFL,
news, former Bear, Brandon Marshall said there was no room on the
Giants for Dez Bryant, who was recently cut by the Cowboys. The
Giants may have taken care of that by cutting Marshall. Marshall was
a talented guy, but in all his years in the NFL and all of his teams,
he never played on a team that made the playoffs. It seemed that
every team he played for was happy to get him, but even happier to
let him go.
